The only storm cloud formed at NorthEast decided to go on the Paragliding World Championship, obliged the security and meetdirector
to declare the stop of the race just five minutes before the validation of the day's task.
Once again, a sudden phenomenon arrived and rapidly degenerated into rain, so that it hasn't even been possible to allow five
minutes longer to pass the time required by regulations to consider the task valid and thus allow pilots to accumulate the score
derived from the kilometers traveled: The stop has been declared after 1 hour flight. So there were only missing 5 minutes to
consider the task valid.
This was an unexpected phenomenon, especially as the flight conditions were particularly good at first: the pilots had been able
to take height easily and, thanks to an extended warm front, keep the height with same ease.
Starting at 12.50 above Rubbio (VI), pilots are positioned on the starting line divided into two groups, one half a bit more
northerly and the other half a bit more southerly, crossing the starting line in direction of Piovene di Rocchette where the first
turning point has to be reached. Favorable conditions make the two trajectories rejoin early, forming a compact group. With the
advancement of the distance the group starts to spread: fast in front of all the Slovenian Dusan Oroz, 500 m behind him the
chasing group with all the favorites. Then at 12.50 when everything seemed to go in the best way, we had stop the task
suddenly: the thunderstorm, which immediately transformed into rain, left no other choice for the race director.
Then the pilots invert the route and return to land at Borso Del Grappa, where the shuttle busses are waiting to bring them back
to the Boscherai headquarters.
"We anticipated the take-off time, because the conditions for flying were great. The pilots, in fact, started very fast - explains
Maurizio Bottegal (meet-director) - and they had no difficulty making and maintaining height. Unfortunately, while everything
seemed to work in the best way I got a message from the Security Director Giampiero Di Brina that it was raining in the area of
Larivi. At that point, I could not wait one minute more to stop the task. The pilots were fast so there had been a concrete risk that
they would arrive in a dangerous zone due to the wind. It's a pity that the task is not valid due to a lack of 5 minutes. On the
other hand, I want to point out the perfect teamwork between me, the director of security, Giampiero di Brina and the head of
take-off marshalls, Franco Canal. Our coordination allowed us to finish everything in perfect safety."
The task is not valid because the riders did not fly at least 1 hour and 5 minutes as required by the regulations.
The results are therefore unchanged regarding to the announcements yesterday.
